Falling from a bicycle can be painful. This is especially true if you have been hit by a vehicle. Other than wearing a helmet, cyclists have little protection in the event of an accident which is why they are particularly vulnerable to harm. Even being “doored,” which happens when a cyclist rides into an open car door, can result in severe injuries. According to Statistics Canada and the Canadian Automobile Association, about 7,500 cyclists are seriously injured in traffic accidents each year. Worse, about 75 cyclists are killed on average in Canada every year.
Common injuries can include minor cuts and scrapes, road rash, broken bones, concussion and head trauma, along with neck, back and spinal cord injuries.
Some injuries could lead to paralysis or death. Scarring or disfigurement can result and limbs may need to be amputated.
